Introduction to Azhikode South

Azhikode, a coastal village in the Kannur district of Kerala and is quite famous as it is the birth place of Sukumar Azhikode who was a great thinker as well as literary critic. The nearest towns to this village are Kodungallur and Paravoor. This village comes under the Kodungallur Taluk. The main attraction of this coastal village is the Munakkal beach and the village has got shore stretch of three kilometers and fishing is the major occupation of this village.

Brief History of Azhikode

Azhikode is one of the main ports that connect Kerala to international trade as well as commerce. St Thomas who came to India for the propagation of Christianity landed in this village and the village has the first church of India named after him. It is in this village, the inception of Christian community started. It is said that St Thomas reached India during 52AD to spread Christian faith among the Jewish diaspora who were present in Azhikode. St Thomas is supposed to have landed in the ancient port of Muziris which is in proximity to Kodungalloor. St Thomas visited Palayoor which was a Hindu priestly community then and he left Palayoor in 52 AD and moved towards the southern part of Palayoor and established Ezharappallikal or seven and half churches. The churches of Kollam, Kodungallur, Nilackal, Niranam, Kokkamangalam, Palayoor, Kottakkavu, Palayoor, thiruvithancode Arappallu – the half Church comes under the seven and the half churches. According to Indian Christian, St Thomas along with a jewish merchant landed in Kodungallur in AD 52. Till date jewish community is present here tracing their ancient history.

Climate of Azhikode

Azhikode has a tropical climate and during most of the months it receives significant amount of rainfall. Though there is a short dry season, but it has little effect on the overall climate of the coastal village. The temperature of the village averages 27.2oC and the precipitation of the village is 3375 mm.

Azhikode is renowned for its Munakkal beach and it has been the major tourist attraction of the village.

Apart from Munakkal beach, the Azhikode is also renowned for Kodungallur Bhagavathy temple as well as Cheraman Juma Masjid both are situated some 10 Kms from this place. The Azhikode village is also quite famous for St Thomas church and also for the newly set up handloom village at Azhikode.

Azhikode celebrates beach festival and Harmony festival. Apart from that, it also celebrates Onam and Christmas.

Azhikode can be reached by train and the closest railway station is the Chirakkal railway station which is located 1 Km away from the village. Vallapattanam railway station is situated 2 Kms away from the Azhikode village. Nearest airport is the Calicut Airport which is 120 Kms away from the village.
